So disappointed about quicktime. I can't access Quicktime at all. Also the fact that photobooks no longer has the options, backgrounds etc that we used to have. My business is digital scrapbooking and now I can't use it the way I need to. I have an old black macbook and it still runs decent programs so am cribbing those - such a pain and not a great compliment to my 2017 iMac and High Sierra. (Not everyone using Macs is in the Pixar league) And please don't tell me to go out and pay to get essential stuff elsewhere. What's up Apple? Don't your users matter at all when you wish to cut corners?
That seemed a little bit too good to be true, and when I tried itout on my recently bought MacBook Air with MacOS 10.13.6 and QuickTime 10.4 installed, I wasn't surprised to see it go wrong. The main problem is that as soon as audio is turned on in a QuickTime screen video, it starts repeating continuously an unbearable sequence of (mostly strident and high frequency) sounds in the background which all but hides any other sound. And yes, I double-checked the "Use ambient noise reduction" boxes to be checked and the volumes to be set reasonably in System Prefs > Sound.

Playing HEVC/h.265 files also requires a lot on computer hardware. For solely CPU decoding, at least an Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 5 or better CPU are needed to get a good experience. While CPU decoding could consume a lot of resource, and it's easy to get a high CPU usage, up to 350% for i7 processor. So you'd better configure your Mac computer with a graphic card which is available for hardware acceleration. For that, 5K iMac (late 2015), 27-inch iMac, and MacBook Pros 2016 or the latest 2022 Apple Mac Studio powered by M1 Max or M1 Ultra processor support hardware decoding and encoding 4K HEVC videos with 24-core GPU or 48-core GPU processor.
QuickTime 10.0 was first demonstrated at WWDC (Apple Worldwide Developers Conference) in 2009. The application ships with Mac OS X 10.6 and higher. This version of QuickTime was rewritten from scratch to include support for 64-bit codecs, which in turn does not allow the player to natively play some legacy codecs, such as MIDI, interractive QuickTime movies, and QTVR.
Thanks for the response. I will try those links. I thought I downloaded the Avid Codecs as I have in the past and installed but no luck when I installed. They worke great on Mavericks with Avid 7 but on high sierra with composer ultimate all sorts of problems. Yes I do use VLC and quicktime player for years. It opens reluctantly in quicktime7 but I think I am missing an audio component as the sound doesn't play. This is all weird as things worked great on MC 7 and Mavericks. Maybe I can download Final Cut X on this system and it will come with all the needed codecs ?

QuickTime 2.0 for Windows appeared in November 1994 under the leadership of Paul Charlton. As part of the development effort for cross-platform QuickTime, Charlton (as architect and technical lead), along with ace individual contributor Michael Kellner and a small highly effective team including Keith Gurganus, ported a subset of the Macintosh Toolbox to Intel and other platforms (notably, MIPS and SGI Unix variants) as the enabling infrastructure for the QuickTime Media Layer (QTML) which was first demonstrated at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in May 1996. The QTML later became the foundation for the Carbon API which allowed legacy Macintosh applications to run on the Darwin kernel in Mac OS X.[citation needed]
QuickTime 7.5 was released on June 10, 2008.[77] QuickTime 7.5.5 was released on September 9, 2008,[78] which requires Mac OS X v10.4 or higher, dropping 10.3 support. QuickTime 7.6 was released on January 21, 2009.[79] QuickTime 7.7 was released on August 3, 2011.[80]
The COM/ActiveX option was introduced as part of QuickTime 7 for Windows and is intended for programmers who want to build standalone Windows applications using high-level QuickTime movie playback and control with some import, export, and editing capabilities. This is considerably easier than mastering the original QuickTime C API.[115]
Apple's decision to adopt HEVC basically means two things - higher quality video and better compression rates. The HEVC standard enables a video to be compressed into a file that is about half the size (or half the bit rate) of H.264 / AVC. To put that another way, a HEVC video file offers significantly better visual quality than an AVC file of equivalent size or bit rate. While results vary depending on the type of content and the encoder settings, videos encoded in HEVC typically exhibit fewer compression artifacts and offer smoother playback than videos encoded using AVC.
According to Apple, HEVC can compress 4K video files to up to 40 percent smaller file sizes than AVC without losing quality, which means users who upgrade their devices to iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra will be able to take the same high-quality videos without using up as much storage space. At the same time, transferring high-resolution video files between devices and over networks will require significantly less bandwidth, a key advance considering new 4K iTunes content launched for the new Apple TV 4K.
